Jammu, Aug 12 (TNI): Holding vast experience of life, Old age showcases the reality of life too. At this state when the society owes much to the stalwarts in their last stage, the government behaving miser does much less for these pillars of yesteryears. To honour their services, governments of all the states of the country provide old age pension. In our state, Social Welfare Department provides this pension and this pension is a paltry sum of Rs 200 per month. 

The pensioners of the state have been demanding an increase in the old age pension so that they can lead an honourable life.

One of the pensioners Milkhi Ram from Akhnoor talking to TNI stated that even this paltry pension is not provided to us in time. We have to visit many times to the banks and the office of the Social Welfare Department to enquire about the status of the pension.

He said that this pension should be hiked to rupees one thousand per month and should be paid regularly so that they get enough money at least for their medical needs.

It is pertinent to mention here that there are approximately 12 lakhs of pensioners in the state and about 25 thousand in Tehsil Jammu alone.

In many cases the old age pension is the only source of income for them as the children of these aggrieved did not care for them.

It is notable to mention here that inflation has been increased many times in past years but the pension being provided to the pensioners remains the same for so many years.

Another such pensioner, Ramesh Lal from Marh area of Jammu said that this is the crucial time when these senior citizens required financial support, government have left them in lurch instead of increasing the pension.

He also said that several organisations of the government employees are protesting for implementation of the recommendations of sixth pay commission to the employees but no one thinks about those old aged people that are helpless and left alone on the mercy of God.

He appealed to all the organisations and right thinking persons to help them in getting due share for them.

Minister for Social Welfare Sakina Itoo could not be contacted for her comments even after repeated attempts.
