Himachal Pradesh is all set to host the world level Himalayan Open Paragliding Championship-2010 to be held from 11th to 14th November 2010 in Bir-Biling in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. The event will have international level professional para gliders from various countries around the world competing with each other. The event will also have local pare gliders participating and this includes women as well.
The Championship is divided into three categories- open category (30 kms), women category (30 kms) and novice category (10- 15 kms).This is the first time the novice category has been introduced and is a perfect platform for local para gliders and amateur para glides to develop their skills to promote themselves to a higher level.
The top three winners of open championship will be given cash prizes of Rs. 25,000, Rs. 15000 and Rs.10,000 respectively. Similarly, the winners of women and novice category would get cash prizes of Rs. 10000, Rs. 7000 and Rs.5000 along-with trophies.
The championship is being organized by the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Department in collaboration with Department of Youth Services and Sports, with technical support from Aero Club of India.
The Aero Club of India is in charge of handling the technical details of the event which includes rescue, retrieval and safety measures and other technical aspects like weather, temperature.
The state of Himachal Pradesh is famous for many adventure activities including para gliding, ice skating in winter, white water rafting, rock climbing and rappelling. The state has hosted many adventure sports competitions such as Zorbing ball in Solang Valley and bike and car races that starts from Shimla, and runs though regions of Ladakh region in Jammu and Kashmir before ending at Manali.
The Paragliding Championship event will be inaugurated by Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister, Prem Kumar Dhumal.
