Dental clinic operating in ‘unhygienic conditions’ sealed

“He (Dr Ahmad) was using spoiled equipment for dental procedures which we recovered,” said a doctor who was part of the team, adding there was no facility for even sterilisation of equipment.

Health officials in Anantnag town Thursday raided and sealed a dental clinic found operating in unhygienic conditions, listed as one of the causes for around 2000 Hepatitis C cases recorded in Kokernag area of the southern Kashmir district in the last six years.

A team constituted by chief medical officer Anantnag to supervise malpractices at private clinics raided a dental clinic run by Dr Shabnam Ahmad and found it operating allegedly in medically unacceptable conditions.

“He (Dr Ahmad) was using spoiled equipment for dental procedures which we recovered,” said a doctor who was part of the team, adding there was no facility for even sterilisation of equipment.

“We will be submitting a detailed report to the chief medical officer (CMO) Anantnag for necessary action.”

Dr Fazil Kochak, CMO Anatnag confirmed the dental clinic run by Dr Ahmad was sealed by his team for operating in poor hygienic conditions.

Dr Ahmad, the involved dental surgeon was also using supplies meant for government hospitals at his clinic situated right in front of the district hospital at Janglatmmandi area of the town.

“The team also recovered the hospital supplies and expired dental materials from the clinic,” an official said.

After Hepatitis C cases came to fore in many villages of Kokernag health experts and government were quick to attribute the infection to mainly poor health practices, unsafe injections and unhygienic dental practices in this area.

During the last six years at least 2000 cases of Hepatitis C were recorded from a small area of Kokernag alone.

Meanwhile, doctors alleged that the accused Dr Ahmad agitated over sealing of his clinic rushed to the district hospital and misbehaved with the team members.
